About This Source Type
Preprints from ChemRxiv, arXiv, bioRxiv, and other servers are increasingly cited in chemistry literature. In ACS style, preprint citations include the author(s), title, the preprint server name in italics, the year in bold, and the DOI.
Key Formatting Tips
- 1Preprint server name is italic (ChemRxiv, arXiv, bioRxiv)
- 2Year is bold, just like in journal article citations
- 3Always use the DOI — arXiv also has DOIs via doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.xxx
- 4Note that preprints are not peer-reviewed — some journals require disclosure
- 5Check if the preprint has been published as a journal article since submission
